David Koepp's Ghost Town is a pretty decent comedy which comes as a pleasant surprise from a promising director and writer. The man is primarily a high-profile writer who worked on blockbusters such as Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, War of the Worlds, Spider-Man, Secret Window, Panic Room, Snake Eyes, Jurassic Park, Mission: Impossible and other prominent movies.
The interesting comedy portrays Bertram Pincus (Ricky Gervais) as a dentist who dies unexpectedly, but is miraculously revived after seven minutes. The side effect is that he now has the annoying ability to see ghosts, who are annoying him with various errands that he is supposed to perform for them. Frank Herlihy (Greg Kinnear) pesters him into breaking up the impending marriage of his widow Gwen (Téa Leoni). The predictable happens between Gwen and the former sociopath Dr. Pincus.
The humor in Ghost Town is not so over the top that stupid comedies nowadays employ, but rather it is more realistic and plausible. The first part of the movie is dominated by comedy and second one by romance. A decent movie to watch with a loved one, with a stronger than average script and good acting from Greg Kinnear and Ricky Gervais. Koepp is still not an expert director, he has a lot to work on, but his apparent intellectual strength and outstanding writing skills will make him go a long way.
Ghost Town is tagged with a PG-13 rating for some strong language, sexual humor and drug references and runs for 102 minutes.
