Having to choose between a remake of the 1960s hit series “Get Smart,” starring Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway, and Mike Myers’ over-the-top comedy “The Love Guru,” moviegoers overwhelmingly chose the former, buying tickets worth an estimated $39.2 million during the Friday – Sunday period.
Steve Carrel and Anne Hathaway tried to fill the honorable shoes of Don Adams as Maxwell Smart, Agent 86 of secret U.S. government spy agency CONTROL, and Barbara Feldon as Agent 99, respectively, in the newly released “Get Smart,” from Warner Brothers.
While critics’ reviews have not been necessarily enthusiastic, plenty of nostalgic moviegoers were more than willing to fill theaters across the US and Canada to see the remake, as proven by the weekend box office.
Although another freshly released comedy was also available for enjoyment, namely Mike Myers’ “The Love Guru,” from Paramount Pictures and Spyglass Entertainment, preferences were clear. “Get Smart” opened at No. 1 with the afore-mentioned results while the latter opened at No. 4 with a modest $14 million, well below the $20 million range expectations.
Myers stars as Pitka, an eccentric guru who in his wisdom proffers an abundance of penis jokes and bathroom humor. His co-stars are Jessica Alba and Justin Timberlake.
There were other laughs to be had in theaters this week. DreamWorks Animation’s “Kung Fu Panda,” warmly welcomed by film critics, continued to fare well at the box office, maintaining its No. 2 position with $21.7 million in its third weekend.
The animated family film, which features the voices of Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Dustin Hoffman, Jackie Chan, Lucy Liu and Seth Rogen, among others, has so far collected some $155.6 million since its release.
Marvel Entertainment’s “The Incredible Hulk,” which debuted last week at the top of the box office chart, slipped to a decent No. 3 this week, with $21.6 million, bringing its 10-day total to $96.5 million.
Rounding out the top five is M. Night Shyamalan’s reviled “The Happening,” which dropped to No. 5, with a measly $10 million, compared to its $30.5 million opening last week. Described by Shyamalan himself as a fun B movie, the 20th Century Fox horror flick starring Mark Wahlberg and Zooey Deschanel has little else left to go than into oblivion.
