Hmm, the band equivalent of “American Idol” contestant Sanjaya? Who could possibly resist missing that on TV??!!
Fox has found itself the judges and host for the upcoming reality talent show “The Next Great American Band,” inspired by the already ratings-record-setting “American Idol.”
Frontman John Rzeznik of the Goo Goo Dolls, drummer Sheila E. and Australian “Idol” judge Ian “Dicko” Dickson will judge the competing bands, while “New Zealand Idol” star Dominic Bowden will play host.
The concept and format will be pretty much identical to those of “American Idol,” except for one significant difference: the contestants will be unknown bands trying to prove their talent and earn a recording contract with 19 Recordings.
Those competing have no limits concerning age or type of music performed.
Ten semifinalist bands will perform each week before a live studio audience and receive the kind of feedback and criticism most of us have got used to from the judges of “American Idol,” Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell.
Similarly, Dominic Bowden will probably make the best he can to assuage hurt feelings and entertain viewers back home, just like Ryan Seacrest has been doing for “Idol” throughout the years.
After auditions across the States, Rzeznik, Sheila and Dickson will make their pick and choose in time for the October premiere of the show.
Viewers are more than welcome to send their own votes and choose their favorites. The winning band will receive a record contract with 19 Recordings, just like “Idol” finalist Jordin Sparks recently did.
“American Band” premieres Oct. 19 on Fox and will air Fridays at 8 p.m.
