German Chancellor Addresses Israeli Parliament for the First Time

Angela Merkel will become the first German chancellor to address Israel’s parliament, the Knesset.

But there are some Knesset members who do not wish to hear Merkel’s speech in German, such as Arieh Eldad, who said he would not attend the address, out of personal reasons.

"My grandparents were murdered by Germans," Eldad told CNN. "The last words that they heard in life were in German. The orders to shoot and kill them were in German."

"There is no forgiveness forever and ever and ever until the last day," Eldad said.

The diplomatic relations between Germany and Israel started in 1965, but the two countries are trying to improve their ties.

Merkel is in Jerusalem to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the founding of Israel after World War II. Born in former East Germany, a country that never recognized the state of Israel, she is the first world leader that marked the event this year.

“The visit by the chancellor is unprecedented in many ways,” Israeli President Shimon Peres said, during a joint press briefing with Merkel. “I see Merkel's visit as a really great contribution to add a new dimension to world attempts to end the conflict here.”

During her trip, Merkel visited the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial, where she noted in the guestbook: “In recognition of the German responsibility for the Holocaust, the government stresses its determination with this first German-Israeli consultation for a joint shaping of the future.”

Holocaust survivor Manfred Gerstenfeld said he was pleased with the present relationship between the two countries.

“I would say it is ever more important that she is showing the world that Germany still admits its guilt,” Gerstenfeld said, according to CNN.

Merkel emphasized the threat Germany and Israel share regarding Iran’s nuclear ambitions. At the moment, Germany plays a quite significant role in the Middle East. German officials are currently trying to free two Israeli soldiers captured by Hezbollah in 2006. Germany has also provided Israel with many technologically advanced submarines, capable of carrying nuclear missiles.
