“Star Trek” star George Takei and his partner of more than
two decades, Brad Altman, tied the knot Sunday evening thus making official a
relationship that has already endured the test of time.
George Takei and Brad Altman received some 200 of their
friends Sunday evening for a reception on the grounds of the Japanese American
National Museum, reports People magazine.
A koto player adorned in kimono played an ancient Japanese
stringed instrument after which the couple sipped sake from cups and said their
vows to one another, circled by yellow rose petals, adds People.
Maid of honor and best man were Takei’s former “Star Trek”
co-stars Nichelle Nichols and Walter Koenig, respectively.
When California’s
Supreme Court allowed gay marriage under the state’s constitution earlier this
year, George Takei was among the first celebrities to announce his impending marriage
to his same-sex partner.
He wrote on his website at the time: “Our California dream
is reality. Brad Altman and I can now marry. We are overjoyed! At long last,
the barrier to full marriage rights for same-sex couples has been torn down. We
are equal with all citizens of our state!”
The 71-year-old actor, well known for portraying helmsman Mr.
Sulu on the USS Enterprise, both on the small screen and the silver one, first
revealed his sexual orientation in 2005.
“[Brad] is my love and I can’t imagine life without him.
Now, we can have the dignity, as well as all the responsibilities, of marriage.
We embrace it all heartily,” his post earlier this summer read.
One gay couple that reached the altar before Takei and his
loved one are Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, who tied the knot in
mid-August at their Los Angeles
home.
