Finally, some refreshing news! Wednesday, Akshay Rajagopal,
an 11-year-old boy from Lux Middle School in Lincoln, Nebraska,
became a little star when he won a $25,000 college scholarship at the 20th
annual National Geographic Bee contest.
What’s even more refreshing is that the kid didn’t do it for
the money or for the “fame.” He’s just a big fan of Geography.
“I get to learn about the world and how it works, which is
cool,” he said, reported The Associated Press.
His parents said that Geography was his passion since he was
5. They also said that the boy studied really hard a couple of months to get
ready for the contest.
“He's been interested in geography since he was 5,” said his
mother, Suchitra Srinivas, according to The Associated Press.
And don’t think that the questions were easy.
He was asked, for example, about the location of Tillya
Tepe(Afghanistan), about the
westernmost Asian national capital (Ankara in Turkey) and
many other question that could have made your head hurt.
The kid’s attitude was also humble, as he said that he was
just lucky.
Standing on stage and holding that big check in his arms,
Akshay said he felt special.
National Geographic Bee, run by Natioanl Geographic, brought
together one student from every U.S. state and territory and a
student from a military family. Akshay was the youngest boy of the 10
finalists.
The boy who came in second was 3-year-old Hunter Bledsoe,
from Trussville, Ala.
Alex Trebek, the host of “Jeopardy,” said that this contest
proves that some middle school kids know more about Geography than most of the
nation.
