Gay Marriage Ban Upsets Many Californians, Celebs Join Protest

Numerous Hollywood stars expressed their anger about California's ban on gay marriage. Many celebrities manifested their discontent over the passing of Proposition 8 in California this week.

Some of the celebs even attended the protest on Wednesday to disapprove of the marriage ban. Stars such as Wanda Sykes, Rose McGowan and Lance Bass joined the protest, while other celebs such as Ellen DeGeneres, Rosie O'Donnell, Madonna and Melissa Etheridge protested on TV, online or onstage.

Another group of about 2,000 gay-rights advocates gathered outside the gates of a Mormon temple to protest. Meanwhile, stars present at the BAFTA L.A. Brittania Awards at Hyatt Regency Century Plaza Hotel such as Sean Penn, James Cromwell, Patricia Clarkson and Anjelica Huston said they were behind the protesters.

Actor Sean Penn said that it would be a good idea to join the rows of the protesters.

"It was a shameful decision that was made," the actor said according to The Associated Press news agency.

On the other side of the “barricade,” the social and religious conservatives celebrated the passing of Proposition 8 which bans same-sex marriage in California, Florida and Arizona.

In California, the ban had more than 52% of the vote. The vote of the supporters of gay-marriage was hurt by the large turnout among black and Hispanic voters who came to vote for Barack Obama, who opposes same-sex marriage.

In Arizona and Florida, the opponents of the same-sex marriage won by even bigger margins.

“It was a great victory,” said the Rev. James Garlow, senior pastor of Skyline Church in San Diego County and a leader of the campaign that fought to pass Proposition 8.

“We saw the people just rise up,” he added.
