Gary Glitter, an ex-British rock star who yesterday was released from a Vietnam prison after serving a 33-month sentence for child molestation, remained at Bangkok's international airport after rejecting to board a flight to the UK, Reuters reported.
The convicted pedophile, whose real name is Paul Francis Gadd, arrived at Bangkok Airport at 10 p.m. local time on Tuesday in order to board a connecting flight to London, Chatchawal Suksomjit, Thailand's immigration chief, stated.
Glitter served a three years jail term in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam for child sex-abuse. After being deported from the easternmost country on the Indochina Peninsula, he flew to Bangkok.
The sentence he received for sexually molesting two girls, age 11 and 12, required deportation upon release.
However, the 64-year-old rocker refused to leave the hub of South East Asia, asking for approval to stay in Thailand or any other Asian country. Nonetheless, "When he shows up, we will have to detain him. He isn't allowed to enter Thailand,'' being considered a persona non grata in the country, Chatchawal said.
"We don't want someone with a bad record staying in our country," asserted Lieutenant Colonel Phakapon Saiubon, deputy superintendent of Suvaranabhumi airports immigration police, transit division.
Until Thai immigration authorities decided to deport Glitter, he was given permission to wait in transit.
According to Glitter's claim, he fell ill and his condition didn't allow him to fly. He was diagnosed with an inflammation of the ribs that lead to chest pain, the Agence-France Press reported.
