Gaming Consoles Sales Were Down in July, Report Says

Figures released by the NPD show that July was the month when the US video game industry saw a decline in overall sales. However, the sales were up 28 percent compared to last year and experts believe that they will reach the $22 billion figure by the end of the year.

Nintendo's Wii remains the best selling console on the market, with 11.56 million units sold since its release, followed by Microsoft's Xbox 360, which sold 10.67 million units even though it reached the market a year earlier than Nintendo's console.

Sony sold 5.08 million PlayStation 3s, but it has managed to stay in front of the Xbox 360 for several month now.

During the month of July, Wii sales dropped to 555,000 units, compared to the 667,000 that were sold in June. The trend was similar for Sony, whose PS3 sales went down to 225,000 units from 406,000 in June, but were still better that those of Microsoft, which vended 205,000 Xbox 360s, down from 220,000.

The same thing happened for software and accessories. Compared with last year, the sales for these types of products were up 61 and 25 percent respectively in June, but in July the figures were up with only 41 percent and 19 percent.

The most popular game in July was the “NCAA Football '09” for Xbox 360, which was bought by 397,600 consumers. The “Wii Fit balance Board” came in second, with 369,600 units sold, while third place was claimed by Activision, which vended 309,700 copies of its “Guitar Hero: On Tour” game.
