Galaxy’s very own David Beckham
scored his first Major League Soccer goal of the season, in a 2-0 victory
against the San Jose Earthquakes, after a full 90 minutes run for the English
player. Thursday night wasn’t a very pleasant one for the Quakes, as their long
time awaited debut following more than 2 long unlucky years wasn’t what they
would have wanted.
It wasn’t the Quakes’ victory to
take, as Beckham waited nine “long” minutes before defeating goalkeeper Joe
Cannon and scoring the first goal of the match. “It’s a bit of a reality check
for us,” said Earthquakes right wing Ronnie O’Brien to the San Jose Mercury
News. “It’s a good game for us to lose.”
Still lacking a strong defense,
and probably some time to adjust to the competition, the San Jose Earthquakes
let former forward Landon Donovan score the second goal that night in minute
37, with a bit of Beckham assist.
“Last year, I was probably 50%
fit when I started,” said Beckham to ESPN. “I was playing in games I shouldn’t have
been and it just sort of went downhill from there. I feel great after two games
and my England game, so I’m ready to get on with it,” he added.
The Galaxy players looked in
their element on the Home Depot Center field that night, and the Earthquakes
didn’t “shake” them that hard either. Their plan worked out from the beginning,
and with a Beckham-Donovan team in perfect shape, nothing got in their way that
night.
“I think tonight was a good team
performance. After our first game, which was difficult to take, we worked hard
tonight and played well and that makes up happy,” Beckham said after the game
to ESPN.
