One week after the official release of GTA IV, Rockstar has
broken the silence and announced the official sales of their widely-acclaimed
game.
According to Rockstar, the latest title of the GTA franchise has
surpassed the forecasts and sold 6 million units worldwide, which means $500
million.
With these figures, GTA IV’s launch is now officially the
biggest event in the entertainment industry, surpassing last year’s release of
Halo 3, which achieved $300 million in its first week of availability.
"Grand Theft Auto IV's first week performance
represents the largest launch in the history of interactive entertainment, and
we believe these retail sales levels surpass any movie or music launch to date,"
said Strauss Zelnick, Take Two CEO.
Before the official launch of the game the analysts have
predicted that GTA IV will sell five million copies in its first week and it
will earn $400 million.
With these results under its belt, it remains to be seen if
Take Two will be still acquired by EA, which initiated a hostile take over two
months ago.
