Steve Ogletree, Kirstin’s grandfather thanked the crew that tried to save the life of Kirstin Reann Blockinger, the 14-month-old girl who died in a helicopter crash in Aurora last week. He said that his niece, Kirstin, couldn't have been on a better flight, adding that the crew members truly were Air Angels who brought the girl home to Jesus.
The girl was being flown from Valley West Community Hospital in Sandwich to Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago when the Air Angels chopper crashed in Aurora. The girl and the crew were killed in the accident.
Nurse William Mann, 31, was remembered for his dedication to serving others at a funeral that celebrated his courage and his willingness to help people.
Mann’s family, his friends, paramedics and his colleagues gathered at the Norridge's Divine Savior Church and thanked Mann’s mother for the work of his son, who helped so many people and saved so many lives. His fellow crew members were wearing arm bands with the name of all victims from the crash: Kirstin Reann Blockinger, William Mann, pilot Delbert Waugh, 69, of Carmel, Ind., and paramedic/firefighter Ronald Battiato, 41, of Peotone. They said that Mann risked his life for a child to have a chance to live.
Rev. Michael Alcantara called Mann "the sunshine in the room" and said that he "packed so much in his short life."
Mann had worked for the Air Angels medical transport service since July. Before working for the Air Angels, Mann was a police officer in Huntley and a paramedic in Norwood Park.
