Fugitive Marine Arrested in Mexico

The three-month international manhunt for the Marine who allegedly killed his pregnant colleague after previously violating her was caught and arrested Thursday night in Mexico, authorities said.

Marine Cpl. Cesar Laurean was put under arrest at about 7 p.m. after a joint operation which included the FBI and Mexican police. He was charged with murder in the death of Marine Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach, 20.

Laurean is currently in detention at the Michoacan state Attorney General's Office in Morelia. When reporters asked the arrested Marine whether he had anything to say regarding his situation, he replied: "Proof," but wouldn’t give further explanations.

Probably the burned remains of his pregnant colleague found in January in the backyard of his home near Camp Lejeune will cover that.

"You know my name. You know who I am," Laurean told The Associated Press.

The local police, who where carrying out an anti-kidnapping operation, stopped the Marine as he was walking on the street the rural township of Tacámbaro, Michoacán because he was looking suspicious, said Magdalena Guzman, a spokeswoman for Michoacan state prosecutors.

Guzaman added that Laurean had only 10 pesos (less than a dollar) in his pocket when they caught him and he had been surviving by eating fruits from the fields of the local farms.

Their suspicion was confirmed after they Laurean’s his name through a computer and realized the man was wanted in the United States.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation is now awaiting extradition.

"This was truly an international effort, and we will do all we can to ensure Laurean is brought back to Onslow County as quickly as possible to answer the charges against him," said Nathan Gray, the special agent in charge of the FBI's Charlotte office.

However, if Laurean opposes the extradition, it could take “a year or two" to bring Laurean back to North Carolina, said Onslow County District Attorney Dewey Hudson.

The burned remains of Lauterbach were found in a fire pit in the Marine’s yard. Before fleeing, Laurean left a note saying that the buried Lauterbach in the woods after she slit her own throat.

However, the autopsy indicated that Lauterbach died after suffering blunt-force trauma to the head.
