Frustrating Pacific Life Open
for World No. 1 Roger Federer, after No. 98 Mardy Fish made a stunning match
against the multiple champion, winning 6-3, 6-2 in front of a big crowd that
seemed to want more.
It was an hour of pain for
Federer, who missed the final, and lost his third game this year. The winner in
the Saturday semifinal will meet No. 3 Novak Djokovic, who won his semifinal
against No. 2 and defending champion Rafael Nadal, after a 6-3, 5-7, 6-2
victory.
Mardy Fish managed to end a
whopping 41-match winning strike against Americans that Federer has been
keeping since 2003, when he lost to American Andy Roddick.
A crowd of 16,870 people
witnessed how a frustrated Federer couldn’t handle the constant pressure from
Fish, who came from also defeating former world No. 1, currently No. 24 Lleyton
Hewitt 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (4) after four rounds and now defeated the current holder of the
No. 1 spot.
Fish said after the game
according to The New York Times: “This obviously wasn’t Roger’s best day, but
hopefully I had little something to do with that,” after keeping complete control
over the entire game.
“When he wanted to attack, everything
worked,” Federer said according to the same source, after Fish took on the
first set 3-0 and never gave up the lead since.
In the Sunday’s final of the
Pacific Life Open, Mardy will face Australian Open Champion Novak Djokovic. The
two had previously met at the US Open in 2006, when the Serbian was victorious.
The 20-year-old Djokovic is also last year’s runner up at this event.
