British playwright Peter Morgan is the man behind the script for one of the newest productions, namely “Frost/Nixon”. The movie had a different outcome that Morgan ever wanted or even anticipated. Apparently, the movie “Frost/Nixon” had the gift of evoking in the public feeling of sympathy and appreciation for Richard Nixon. Moreover, it seems that the public viewed the movie as a dramatization of presidential abuse of power, and even as a metaphor for the alleged abuses the Bush administration is blamed for. Although these opinions and reviews are nowhere near the intentions Morgan had when he wrote the script, but it seems that these views are highly beneficial when it comes to the financial aspect, as the movie has registered great success at the box office.
In the movie, Nixon is played by Frank Langella, who was highly acclaimed for a masterful performance. Morgan managed to give Nixon a more humane face, although his actions are unforgivable by the American people, even now after almost 35 years have passed since Richard Nixon was forced to give up presidency.
Morgan’s movies seem to be often misinterpreted. For instance, his movie “The Queen” gave birth to pro-monarchy sentiments, which was not what Morgan had intended. Director Ron Howard stated that he searched the movie for a reason to forgive Nixon, yet he concluded at the end of the movie that there was no excuse for the abuse of power committed by Richard Nixon. James Reston Jr., however, said that what Nixon did “was trivial compared to George W. Bush.”
