Admitting they were as surprised by Mariah Carey's unexpected nuptials as was everyone else, friends of the diva said she and actor Nick Cannon seem like a happy couple.
The news of Mariah Carey's wedding to rapper Nick Cannon after less than two months of dating came as a shock not only to fans but also to friends, who gave their best wishes to the newlyweds.
"I'm shell shocked," a source in Carey's camp was quoted by People.com as saying. "As far as I know, they are happy together."
While there is still no official confirmation from any of the couple's representatives, it has been reported that the 39-year-old singer obtained a marriage license on the Caribbean island of Eleuthera, where she and Cannon suddenly decided to tie to knot early last week. Windermere Island is a seven-mile long island in the Bahamas, just off the mainland of Eluethera, where Carey owns an estate.
"Whatever makes them happy," music mogul Russell Simmons told People.com on Friday, adding that he was unaware of the wedding before the news hit the press. "They have a lot in common and should have a lot of fun together."
Cannon's brother, Gabriel, refrained from revealing too many details only wishing well to the two, "I'm trying to be like him and I love him very much," he added.
According to sources, Mariah and Nick met while shooting the video for her song "Bye, Bye," in the Caribbean on March 26, when "Nick was cast as the romantic lead and was flown to Antigua where they met so basically their [romance] started during the shoot," the insider added.
"She's very into religion and Nick is very into religion. That's something they bonded on," the insider said.
This marks Carey's second walk down the isle, she was previously married to music mogul Tommy Mottolato for five year before getting a divorce in 1998. Cannon was one step away from getting hitched last year, after a brief relationship with Victoria’s Secret model Selita Ebanks. However, the pair called off their engagement the same year.
Although Cannon has put out a rap album, he is still best known for his role in the movie "Drumline" and a Nickelodeon TV series.
