Rumors regarding plans to bring 1990s hit series “Friends” to the big screen have been squashed by film studio Warner Bros., who says there is “no truth” to such reports.
HBO series “Sex and the City” enjoyed a successful transition to the big screen this summer, with stars Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon celebrating a comeback worth an estimated $57 million in ticket sales during its three-day opening weekend, to begin with.
“Friends” however will not attempt to repeat this victory, with Warner Bros. director of publicity in the UK, Jayne Trotman, telling the BBC that there is “no truth in the story.”
The six friends of the series, who acted alongside each other for an impressive ten years, became household names in the 1990s. The show ended four years ago, with Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox Arquette, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, Matthew Perry and Matt LeBlanc going their separate ways and trying out new projects.
While the press has been speculating whether they are willing to have a big screen reunion, the actors’ reps have been quick to dispel rumors.
Courtney Cox Arquette’s publicist, John Fogelman, told the BBC he did not know of any plans for a film and Matthew Perry’s spokesperson, Lisa Kasteler, reinforced the denial, saying, “Nothing is happening in this regard, so the rumour is false.”
The final episode of “Friends” was watched by an estimated 52.5 million American viewers – surely a very large portion of these would buy a ticket and watch an hour and a half of Monica, Rachel, Phoebe, Ross, Chandler and Joey making their trademark quips.
The British media had previously reported that all six actors were willing and eager to reprise their roles. Not only that but the film was reported to be released “within the next 18 months.”
