“Friday the 13th” Tops the Box Office

The remake of the classic 1980 horror movie “Friday the 13th” has managed to top the box office on its first week-end in theaters.

Moreover, it seems that it has also set a new record for the horror movies genre, which had previously been held by the 2004 production “The Grudge,” with $39.1 million.

„Friday the 13th” tells the story of hockey-masked killer Jason Voorhees, who has chosen as the perfect location for quenching his thirst for blood a secluded summer camp in the woods, where college kids are partying away.

The „Friday the 13th” franchise has come to put forward as many as ten sequels, including a crossover movie entitled „Freddy vs Jason,” in which Voorhees goes head-to-head with legend killer from „A Nightmare on Elm Street” Freddy Krueger.

This 2009 remake has swiped the first box office position from last week-end’s top dog, romantic comedy starring Jennifer Aniston and Scarlett Johansson „He’s Just Not That Into You.” The latter production fell to second place, with $19.6 million and it was followed by kidnap thriller „Taken,” which stars Liam Neeson and has earned $19.3 million within the three-day week-end.

Next on the box office list was comedy „Confessions of a Shopaholic” at number four, which accounted for a new entry for the week-end, just like thriller „The International,” which ranked at the seventh position.

“Friday the 13th” was directed by Marcus Nispel and produced by Michael Bay, the two having collaborated before on „The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” which was released back in 2003 as a remake of Tobe Hooper’s 1974 original movie.
