French President Nicolas Sarkozy Begins His Visit To India

On Friday French President Nicolas Sarkozy began his visit To India along with a group of officials.

Unfortunately his model-singer girlfriend, Carla Bruni, was nowhere in sight.

The two-day trip to India is aimed at securing the diplomatic and political ties between the two countries.

On Saturday Sarkozy will be the guest of honor at India's Republic Day celebrations.

According to an interview which was published on Friday, the French President said that India and France are about to reach a deal regarding civilian nuclear issues.

This agreement comes after India has finished its deal with the International Atomic Energy Agency about nuclear safeguards, CNN informs.

According to Sarkozy, this deal means that IAEA will be able to present the U.N. watchdog an overview of India’s civilian nuclear program, and will need approval from the Nuclear Suppliers Group.

At the beginning of his visit to India, the two countries reached agreements on defense and the economy.

Local media is already speculating whether Sarkozy will be joined by Bruni in his visit to the Taj Mahal monument, BBC News reports.

His visit to India shows the political and economic influence India has gained.

In his talks with Indian leaders like Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Sarkozy is expected to pursue issues like trade and economic ties between the two countries.

According to correspondents, Sarkozy’s trip done in the same week as the visit to Delhi of British Prime Minister Gordon Brown shows the interest western countries have towards the rising economic power of India.

Probably that the reason why Bruni is not joining Sarkozy on his trip to India, is not to interfere with the Indian foreign ministry's "constraining protocol" about the unmarried partners present at official visits.
