Three French journalists, working for Global Security Mag, were kicked out of the Black Hat security conference after being caught sniffing on the communications that took place in the press conference room and created a list of usernames and passwords of fellow journalists who didn't protect the data they sent.
The organizers already warned participants to refrain from sending information like usernames or passwords unencrypted over the public Wi-Fi network at the conference. They said that "offenders" will be added to the 'Wall of Sheep' at a special event. Strangely enough, on the Wall appeared the login data of some of the most credentialed people in the security industry. Even stranger, some of them changed their login data after being displayed, also in the clear, which resulted in a new listing.
However, the wired network in the press conference pressrooms was off limits to hacking. The three French journalists sniffed the wired network and contacted Brian Markus, better known to conference attendees as "Riverside," who is in charge of the Wall of Sheep, and proposed adding the information they had illegally sniffed from the Black Hat network without permission. Markus said no and alerted organizers, who kicked the three reporters out.
Mauro Israel, Marc Brami, and Dominique Jouniot from Global Security Mag had their press badges confiscated and were supposed to show up Friday at around 2 p.m. to explain their actions at a press conference, but they apparently disappeared. They might be charged or sued, but for the moment they will be allowed to fully explain their actions.
Dan Kaminsky, security researcher and director of penetration testing for IOActive, also released during the Black Hat conference held in Las Vegas his much-anticipated report about the Domain Name Server flaw he found a few months earlier.
