For the ones of you who don’t know this yet, Limp Bizkit’s
Fred Durst also directed a movie that was out Friday: “The Longshots," a
sensitive, welcoming and friendly movie.
The film is based on the true story of the first girl to
play quarterback in the Pop Warner Super Bowl whose name is Jasmine Plummer
(Keke Palmer). Her beer drinking uncle, Curtis Plummer (Ice Cube), helps her
find inner strength and clarifies her purposes. He also stumbles on an unlikely
romance with her teacher. But the highlight of the movie is how Jasmine takes
her team to the league's Super Bowl under the coaching of her uncle who was
himself a former high school football star.
Keke Palmer has a great performance and manages to prove to
us that her career as an actress is rather promising. Ice Cube on the other
hand has his glorious moments but the form of the character he has to play is
not always filled with content, thus he fails to be credible at times.
"The Longshots" was filmed in Louisiana,
at Calvary Baptist
Academy and in Minden as well and it has the faded, used-up,
lived-in look of a good 1970s movie.
Both actors admitted to reporters that the thing that drew
them to the film was the fact that it's a true story. Palmer agreed that the
real-life story was attractive, but added that she was excited about working
with Ice Cube again. She starred in “Barbershop 2” with the star.
The script of the movie was written by Nick Santora, who had
also written and produced some of "Prison Break" and "Law &
Order" episodes.
