There’s no comic book-related job Frank Miller can’t accomplish, especially if it has to do with a fanatical villain in quest of immortality, a horde of noxious splendors and an obscure, shrouded hero.
Frank Miller, a major figure of the comic book world renowned for taking the genre one step closer to mainstream, has made yet another successful move toward the big screen with his cinematic adaptation of the 1940 comic “The Spirit,” which deals with a masked crime-fighter who rises from the dead in order to protect the city he once cleared of villains.
Frank Miller’s first solo attempt as a director after sharing credit with Robert Rodriguez on 2005’s adaptation of his graphic novel “Sin City” shows Gabriel Macht as the agitated Spirit, Samuel L. Jackson in the shoes of a maniacal bad guy named the Octopus and Scarlett Johansson as the Octopus’ sidekick.
Since the Spirit has already been killed, we don’t know what he really is. He seems to be invincible, a sort of crime hating zombie. And his long-lost love, Sand Saref (Eva Mendes), is the kind of girl that likes villains, thus complicating things even more.
Even if the film is not as good as one would expect, producers who brought the Spirit to life decided to offer Frank Miller the helm of yet another production.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Frank Miller is negotiating to direct “Buck Rogers” for Oddlot Entertainment and Millennium Films.
Therefore, comic book fans should toast to a new superhero era.
