The Great Cedar Hotel at Foxwoods Resort and Casino in Connecticut caught fire Tuesday afternoon resulting in the evacuation of nearly 300 guests.
The fire at Great Cedar Hotel, the Mashantucket’s’ second hotel and second casino, was reported by a security guard stationed across from the building around noon yesterday, the Associated Press reported.
Foxwoods Resort Casino and the Great Cedar Hotel are owned and operated by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe.
More than 50 firefighters from the tribe and nearby towns responded to the call and extinguished the fire by evening. As a precaution, firemen evacuated the adjacent Grand Cedars Casino.
Once the trouble was out, firefighters began an investigation to find out the cause of the fire. According to fire officials, the Great Cedar Hotel fire broke out between a mechanical equipment room near the roof and an exterior hall.
A cause of the fire has not been established yet. Foxwoods officials were not speculating about the cause, tribal spokesperson Arthur Henick said, according to the AP.
The good news is that there were no injuries reported in the fire. However the guests were all evacuated from the312-room hotel and given rooms on other hotels on the Mashantucket Pequot reservation and a hotel in North Stonington. They were allowed to return and take their belongings this morning, Foxwoods spokesman Saverio Mancini said. The casino and retail area were opened at 5 a.m.
The fire at the Great Cedar Hotel comes second this week after that at the Harrah's Ak-Chin Casino in Arizona, which was caused by a faulty air-conditioner. The bingo hall where the fire began was evacuated, and the fire contained without damage to the main casino.
Just last week a fire at the Monte Carlo Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas caused the evacuation and closure of the resort. Fire officials said that foam building material lining the roof was to blame for the fire. The Monte Carlo was closed until repairs could be made.
