Warner Bros Company has accused Fox network for “Watchmen” copyright infringement. In a statement released on Monday, Warner Bros stated that they would go on trial if necessary or they would appeal the U.S. District Court last week’s ruling. The court ruled that the studio had disobeyed the copyright of Fox network in making the adaptation for “Watchmen.”
Warner Bros stated that they disagreed with this ruling and that they are now seeing their options of appealing it. The studio added that they rigorously believe that Fox’s asserts “have no merit” and they are sure they would “ultimately prevail, whether at trial or in the Court of Appeals."
In the meantime Fox is looking for a ban of the March 6, 2009, release of “Watchmen.” The movie is directed by Zack Snyder and is one of Warner Bros’ slots for popular programs for 2009. The budget of “Watchmen” is $120 million and even it is considered to be worth nothing as a piece of literature, the studio invested in its publicity campaign and strongly believes that the movie version will earn a lot.
Fox and Warner Bros are scheduled to meet on Monday morning at the Los Angeles federal court. Yet, Judge Gary Feess stated that he stands his former decision and plans to hold a trial on January 20 to see what the remaining damages are. The next year trial is also scheduled to set Fox’s real rights and whether the movie should be blocked.
Fox caught big money at the box office with its Christmas Day release of “Marley and Me” and it is expected to gain more from this trial with Warner Bros.
