Four Injured As Disney Ride Catches Fire

A Kilimanjaro Safaris ride at Disney’s Animal Kingdom ended in an unpleasant incident on Sunday afternoon, when one a fire broke out on one of the trucks. Four people required medical intervention after suffering minor injuries while trying to get off the ride.

One of the visitors, a woman, suffered a knee injury after she jumped from the burning ride, an was taken to the Florida Hospital - Celebration for medical care. The other three visitors were given medical treatment at the scene, without requiring further treatment at the hospital.

According to Disney representatives, the ride was closed for the rest of the day, and it will remain closed until all the other trucks will be checked. Park officials said they were following standard procedure in case of accidents or malfunctions, and that a team was set to inspect the Safari trucks.

The fire appeared to have broken out between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. at one of the trucks. As Disney spokeswoman Andrea Finger said, the fire lit when an engine hose failed, but the blaze was out by the time fire officials arrived at the scene.

Fortunately, this time there were no serious incidents to report, as the injuries suffered by the four visitors were minor. The park is required to report the incidents that ended in serious injuries requiring overnight hospitalization or death.

The Animal Kingdom has had to deal with more serious incidents at the end of 2007, when one woman suffered a fatal heart attack after an Expedition Everest roller coaster ride, and at least other four others complained of various injuries and illnesses, as reported by the state Bureau of Fair Rides Inspection.

Regarding the Sunday incident, the ride is expected to be re-opened by Monday, after the team investigating the trucks will have finished their evaluation and declare the Kilimanjaro Safari safe again.
