This September
may come with four hurricanes, including two that will become major
storms, according to a report co-authored by Colorado State University
researcher Philip J. Klotzbach and his former mentor, professor emeritus
William M. Gray.
“Well
above-average activity has occurred so far during the 2008 hurricane season,”
the report said. “We expect a very active September.”
With another three months of the
official hurricane season left to run, this could be a very stormy period. They
did not update their forecast for the full season on Tuesday.
Ike and Josephine are two of the
mentioned storms having formed in the first days of September. Ike is forecast
to strengthen into a hurricane as early as Wednesday. As far as Josephine is
concerned, it is still too early to tell where it will go or how strong it will
get.
Hanna reached hurricane strength on Monday but turned back
into a tropical storm on Tuesday.
Three other Atlantic hurricanes have been recorded so far
this season: Bertha and Dolly in July and Gustav in August.
Seven storms have been observed so far this season,
including Hurricane Fay, which became the first storm in recorded history to
make landfall in Florida four times, and Hurricane Gustav, which made landfall
as a Category 4 storm in Cuba on August 30, and as a Category 3 storm in
Louisiana on September 1.
Atlantic storm seasons start on June 1st and end
November 30 and usually peak on September 10.
