According to Warner Bros., the distributor of Four
Christmases, the movie gained $46.7 million in five days during the week and
$31.7 million during the weekend that ended on Sunday. This way, Four
Christmases starring Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn, topped the box office
last week.
The holiday-spirited movie tells the story of a couple who
finds out about love during a Christmas visit to their divorced parents. Dan
Fellman, head of domestic distribution for Time Warner Inc's Warner Bros.,
stated that this is what people are looking for. A comedy break in such tough
times is what people pay for.
Last week’s No. 1, the vampire romance Twilight reached only
No. 2 this week with $39.5 million starting on Wednesday. Yet, Twilight fought
Bolt in reaching No. 2 so their position depended on whether the box office
officials took into consideration the five-day or the three-day totals.
Regarding the time of the week, Twilight reached No.2, but
considering the weekend gains, Bolt reached No. 2 too. Starting Friday, the
animated comedy gained $26.6 million and Twilight was left behind with only
$26.4 million in ticket sales.
Yet, the controversial Australia, directed by Baz
Luhrmann, reached only No. 5 in its debut period. The epic romance, which stars
Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman, gained a five-day total of $20 million and a
three-day gain of $14.8 million.
Fox's senior vice president of domestic distribution, Chris
Aronson, stated that the U.S.
opening was incredible as its sales went up to 20% more than expected.
