'Four Christmases' Repeats Box Office Success

The Christmas Spirit settled well over movie theaters it seems, as moviegoers enjoyed a second weekend in the company of Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn, whose holiday comedy "Four Christmases" took in $18.2 million at U.S. and Canadian theaters.

With barely any competition, the movie topped the slow post-Thanksgiving weekend box office, bringing the comedy's two-week sum to $70.8 million, according to distributor Warner Bros. Pictures. The movie is expected to exceed the $100 million landmark.

Stepping back on the second spot was Summit's vampire romance "Twilight," based on Stephenie Meyer's successful first book of the "Twilight" saga, with $13.2 million, bringing its cume to $138.6 million. Directed by Catherine Hardwicke, the film cost only $37 million to make.

On No. 3, Disney's "Bolt" collected $9.7 million to push its three-week total to $79.3 million while "Australia" followed on No. 4 with $9.7 mil, a huge and surprising 64 percent decline from its impressive Thanksgiving weekend sum. "Australia" declined 53 percent to bank $7 mil at No. 4. Wrapping up the top five, "Quantum of Solace" grossed $6.6 million and crossed the $500 million mark worldwide.

Placing sixth was DreamWorks Animation's "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa" which added $5.1 million in its fifth weekend, bringing its total income to $165.7 million. The seventh place was taken by Lionsgate's "Transporter 3," starring Jason Statham, with $4.5 million in its second weekend.

This week's first new entry, Lions Gate Entertainment Corp.’s live-action movie "Punisher: War Zone," debuted on No. 8 with $4 million. The movie is the latest in a line of adaptations of the Punisher graphic novels from Marvel Comics. In the meantime, the other newcomer, "Cadillac Records" followed closely behind, bringing in a decent $3.5 million in 686 locations.
