Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn scored a huge hit at the box office with their "Four Christmases." The movie finished its second consecutive week atop the North American box office, early studio estimates show.
The film which features a couple (Witherspoon and Vaughn) who divide their Christmas holiday to suit their divorced parents, cashed in about $18.2 million over the weekend. The romantic comedy wasn’t received as well by critics and got largely unfavorable reviews.
"It's an evergreen subject for the holiday period," said analyst Paul Dergarabedian.
The Warner Bros. film gathered a two-week total of $70.8 million. It was a good weekend overall at the box office. Hollywood seems to be one of the few industries, if not the only one, that keep growing despite the financial crisis which hit the country. Revenues are up for the fifth weekend in a row.
“Twilight” and all its vampires moved up to the second place after taking $13.2 million in its third weekend. Disney’s family cartoon “Bolt” lost the second spot and is now No.3 after cashing in $9.7 million.
Big-budget movie “Australia” is No.4. After a shaky debut weekend, the epic movie gathered $7 million over the past weekend to manage a total of $30.9 million so far. The Fox film starring star actors Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman cost about $125 million to produce.
The top five of this box office weekend was closed by “Quantum of Solace” which slipped one place.
However, the star of this weekend was “Punisher: War Zone,” which opened at No.8 with earnings of about $4 million.
