Star Trek actor George Takei and his longtime boyfriend tied the knot on Sunday. The marriage ceremony took place in Los Angeles and it honored the actor’s Japanese legacy.
The 71-year-old actor who played Sulu in the science fiction series and his 54-year-old business manager Brad Altman united their destinies on Sunday after a partnership of 21 years. The ceremony was also attended by some former "Star Trek" castmates such as Walter Koenig ("Chekhov") who was the best man and Nichelle Nichols ("Uhura") who had the role of matron of honor. Former Trekker Leonard Nimoy was also among the 200 people who attended the ceremony.
The two partners wore matching tuxedos as they exchanged vows at downtown L.A.'s Japanese American National Museum. The ceremony was carried out by a Buddhist priest and featured Native American wedding bands.
"I can add 'my husband' to the list of things I call you. I vow to care for you as you've cared for me…and to love you as my husband and the only man in my life," said Takei before the crowd gathered at the ceremony.
"May equality live long and prosper!" the actor added.
Takei and Altman plan to spend their honeymoon in South America. However, the two will first appear on CBS' “Early Show” Tuesday morning to talk about the wedding.
The marriage came about three months after same-sex weddings were legalized in California. The new legislation prompted other same-sex couples to tie the knot. Among those couples there were also comedian Ellen DeGeneres and Australian actress Portia de Rossi. The two married last month in Beverly Hills.
