A former middle school teacher was sentenced on Tuesday to
six years in prison for having sexual intercourse with five teenage boys.
According to authorities, Allenna Ward, 24, met the boys at
the school where she worked, in park, at a motel and behind a restaurant. The
boys had 14 and 15 years old.
In court Ward offered her apologies. She said: "I
apologize from the depths of my heart," the Associated Press reports.
The investigation started last year when a note was found by
the school officials believed to be from Ward for one of the boys. Some of the
victims were students at Bell Street Middle School
in Clinton, where
she used to be a teacher. A year ago she was fired from the school.
In September Ward pleaded guilty for three counts of second-degree
criminal sexual conduct with a minor and three lewd acts on a minor.
According to forensic psychiatrist Donna Schwartz-Watts,
Ward is more a childlike victim and not a pedophile, who is suffering from a
personality disorder and a reserved childhood.
The minister’s daughter had a protected life and didn’t get
the opportunity to break away from her family, Schwartz-Watts said.
On the other hand, prosecutors said that she violated
parents’ trust.
Families of the victims attended the hearing but didn’t address
the court.
The sister of one of the victims said after the hearing: "I
just feel like justice has been served. We're just glad that it's all
over."
Donald Hocker, Ward’s lawyer asked for home imprisonment
citing the psychiatric testimony and saying that Ward could be the victim of
other prisoners.
He said: "It's an awful case with awful consequences,
but Allenna Ward is not an awful woman."
Ward received 15 years in prison for every count but it was
reduced to six years. She received another six years on each second-degree
criminal sexual conduct count and the sentences will run at the same time.
