The former National Basketball Association (NBA) referee Tim Donaghy accused of betting on games he officiated intends to plead guilty in federal court on Wednesday, according to recent media reports.
Donaghy has allegedly wagered on games he officiated during the past two seasons and on other matches. The inquiry began on June 20, when investigators from the Bureau of Investigation (FBI) contacted the NBA to point out that an official has been betting large sums of money on several games during the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons.
According to NBA commissioner David Stern, representatives from the FBI and NBA met the next day and the referee resigned on July 9, after 13 seasons in the league.
Donaghy is also investigated for intentionally affecting the number of points scored during a game by calling bogus fouls and for giving away information regarding the referee schedule to external parties.
After the scandal broke out, Stern tried to tilt up the league’s credibility and brush off suspicion surrounding other referees and even players.
“We would like to assure our fans that no amount of effort, time or personnel is being spared to assist in this investigation, to bring to justice an individual who has betrayed the most sacred trust in professional sports, and to take the necessary steps to protect against this ever happening again,” he said.
Despite statements from Stern who said the entire scandal is the work of a “rogue, isolated criminal,” the glamour of the NBA was shaded by Donaghy’s habits, as further investigations revealing that he had a gambling problem.
Officials, players and referees came into an unwanted spotlight, even if reports said no other NBA member is involved in the betting scandal that includes several individuals outside the league.
