Two ex-racing drivers were killed after the private jet they
were in crashed into a Farnborough house, in the southeast of London.
Investigators are currently probing what caused the
twin-engined Cessna Citation I to crash, killing all five passengers on board.
Luckily, the couple living in the destroyed house was on
vacation, so the house was empty at the moment of the accident.
"No survivors were found but I can confirm that there
were no people found in the houses," declared fire brigade spokesman Jim
Bascran, according to Agence France-Presse.
Investigators haven’t discovered the identity of all victims
yet, but UK media reports said that two of the passengers were David Leslie,
54, and Richard Lloyd, 63. Leslie was a former British Touring Car Championship
driver and also a commentator on the Eurosport television, while Lloyd, the
boss of Apex Motorsport, had also been a former touring car champion.
The plane had reportedly taken off from Biggin Hill airport
and had as destination the southwest of France.
Before the accident, the Cessna pilot gave a mayday call,
reporting “severe engine vibrations.” Later, he announced the plane was going
down.
The residents of Farnborough who witnessed the crash were
shocked, and two persons even had to be treated as a consequence. They declared
it was obvious the jet’s pilot made efforts to stay away from people or houses,
while desperately trying to land. He managed to steer the plane away from a
field where some boys were playing football, and then he probably lost control
of the jet and smashed it into the house, a witness informs on CNN’s
website.
