Biswamohan Pani, former design engineer for Intel Corp., was charged by the U.S. District court in Boston in late August with the theft of highly sensitive Intel documents, while in the service of Intel rival company AMD.
A search conducted in Pani’s Worcester, MA home in July by the FBI revealed he had in his possession more than 100 pages of sensitive Intel documents, including 13 top-secret files with details of future Intel chip designs. A criminal complaint was filed to the Boston U.S. District Court in late August, and it has been unsealed on Tuesday.
The FBI’s criminal complaint states that Pani resigned from Intel in May, saying that he was interested in taking a job with a hedge fund, but that he would continue to work at Intel through June 11. However, he started working for AMD on June 2, when he was still an Intel employee and had access to his company laptop and the Intel computer network. He then downloaded the secret Intel files, allegedly in order to turn them in to the rival company.
Intel learned from another employee of Pani’s move to AMD and called the FBI, asking them to conduct a search of his home computer, in order to check for any confidential data.
The FBI have stated that there was no evidence Pani had been conducting industrial espionage for AMD, but more likely had stolen the files to pass them off as his own ideas in his work at AMD. The Sunnyvale, CA company no longer employs Mr. Pani.
The former Intel engineer has not been taken into custody but he has been ordered to turn in his passport pending charges.
