Former Hewlett-Packard Chief Executive and high-profile Republican, Carly Fiorina, underwent surgery for breast cancer on Monday and has good chances to recover completely, media reports unveiled.
Fiorina, 54, discovered her cancer on Feb. 20 and underwent surgery at Stanford University Hospital on Monday.
“The surgery went really well. Her prognosis is excellent and she expects to make a full recovery. She remains enthusiastically committed to a full range of activities and looks forward to her future choices with great optimism,” Fiorina's chief of staff, Deborah Bowker, told the San Francisco Chronicle.
She further said Fiorina will begin a regime of chemotherapy at Stanford, and intends to restrict her activities for the next few months to recover.
Fiorina’s “first priority is her health, but she does look forward to getting back out there as soon as possible,” Bowker said.
After being ousted from Hewlett-Packard, Fiorina joined the political arena, as an economic adviser to Republican presidential candidate John McCain in the 2008 election. Her experience with the McCain team prompted suggestions in California that she run for the seat held by California Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer.
Breast cancer kills annually around 465,000 women, while about 1.3 million other women are diagnosed with the disease, according to the American Cancer Society. Discovering breast cancer in its earliest stages improves survival chances according to researchers.
