Following a fall at her home last week, former first lady
Nancy Reagan was admitted to a local hospital in order to receive medical
treatment for several pelvis and lower spine fractures, her spokeswoman
announced on Wednesday.
Mrs. Reagan was transported to the University of California,
Los Angeles Medical Center, on Monday and is due to remain hospitalized for a
few more days, until physicians consider she is making satisfactory progress
and can return home, according to the statement released by Nancy Reagan’s
spokeswoman Joanne Drake.
The 87-year-old widow of former United
States president Ronald Reagan was taken to the hospital,
whose name was recently changed into the Ronald Reagan
UCLA Medical
Center, after
“experiencing persistent pain,” the statement read.
Medical tests conducted by doctors at the hospital showed
that Mrs. Reagan had suffered a broken pelvis and sacrum as a result of the
fall.
“Her anticipated recovery is six to eight weeks, including
physical therapy and a modified schedule,” Joanne Drake said in the statement,
explaining that Mrs. Reagan was “in good spirits.”
In spite of the fact that Nancy Reagan also suffered a fall
at her Bel Air home in February and was hospitalized for a couple of days, the
injuries proved to be minor and the former first lady was released rapidly.
Nancy Davis Reagan, whose birth name is Anne Frances
Robbins, married Ronald Reagan on March 4, 1952. Her husband, who became
President of the United States
in 1981, was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in the 1990s. His wife
nevertheless dedicated her entire time to looking after Reagan until his 2004
death.
