Ford Recalls 3.6 Million Vehicles with Faulty Switch

Ford Motor Co announced it will recall about 3.6 million vehicles because of an alleged faulty switch which turns of speed control that could overheat and cause fires inside the vehicle, US traffic safety authorities informed.

This measure targets vehicles manufactured between 1992 and 2004, a large category that includes pickup trucks, SUVs, vans, passenger cars and sport utility vehicles. In 2005 and 2006, Ford recalled approximately 6.2 vehicles due to the same safety concern.

“We have not seen a high incidence of fires in this population,” Ford spokesman Dan Jarvis said.

“Customers remain concerned about the long-term durability of the speed control system and about the safety of their vehicles.”

Dearborn-based Ford said it decided to call in the vehicles after receiving several reports of fires in its Crown Victoria models.

The company which is ranked as second on the manufacturing sector in North America is trying to cut losses on the home market, that have been reported at almost 280 million dollars in the second quarter.

Ford said its dealers will mend the problem to all cars by installing a fused wiring harness into the system, operation that will be done free of charge.
