LucasArts representatives claim “The Force Unleashed” is
their fastest-selling game, ever since they started bringing the Star Wars
characters to your computer screens and gaming consoles. More precisely, during
the first days of release, avid Star Wars enthusiasts burst into the stores and
left (after paying, of course) with more than 1.5 million copies of the game.
We are all probably used to a certain type of games inspired
by movies: you are the main character in the game, which is the main character
in the movie, and your quests tend to closely (sometimes too closely) follow
the movie’s plot and story lines. Here’s where “Force Unleashed” takes a
different turn, for the better, in the opinion of fans and (some) game critics
alike. The main character of the game is one not featured in the movies: Darth
Vader’s Apprentice, giving the Star Wars fanatics a realistic, first-hand
experience of what it’s like to have Darth Vader as your mentor. The genius of
their plan is that you are the Apprentice, and not the puppeteer of, let’s say,
Luke Skywalker.
Gamepro.com critic, Cameron Lewis appreciated and even
praised the high quality and attractiveness of the graphics and the highly
satisfactory power-ups, but where the game falls short are uneven combats and
the difficulty in maneuvering the controls.
The game seems highly appreciated, if you only take the high
sales factor into consideration. Some important game reviewers have found the
game to be mediocre, although none have disputed the fame, glory and popularity
of the Star Wars franchise overall. The main slap-on-the-wrist regards the
weird battles in which you are obviously destined to lose, and some levels
which were deemed “unimaginative”.
Whatever the critics say, if you’re a Star Wars fan, be sure
not to miss “The Force Unleashed” and judge for yourself if it is the ultimate
“Star Wars Experience” or not.
