A tumor removed from the brain of a newborn baby contained a tiny foot and other incompletely formed body parts, a pediatric neurosurgeon disclosed today the shocking news.
According to Dr. Paul Grabb, during the procedure of removing the tumor, he noticed it contain a foot, almost perfect, and the formation of another one, a tight and a hand. "It would be a shock to even the most experienced pathologist cutting into a tumor to see this," said Dr. Grab of the Memorial Hospital for Children in Colorado.
The neurosurgeon compared what he saw with the breach delivery of a baby, coming out of the brain. “To find a perfectly formed structure is extremely unique, unusual, borderline unheard of," he told The Associated Press.
The exact cause of the growth is not known yet. Dr. Grabb thinks it might have been a type of congenital brain tumor but tumors like that are typically less complex than a foot or hand. The neurosurgeon also draws attention to “fetus in fetu,” a rare developmental abnormality in which a fetus gets enveloped inside its twin.
In order to see if any further tumor growths occur, Sam Esquibel will be checked each month. He will also need no less than 25 therapy sessions to help with head, as well as neck use. However, the baby is currently fine. “You’d never know if he didn’t have a scar there,” his mother Tiffnie Esquibel said.
