Several accidents, including a 50-car pileup are blocking
more than 14 miles of Interstate 4 in Polk County
beginning with this morning, officials said.
Three people were pronounced dead and at least one vehicle
caught fire. There are at least 50 vehicle involved in the accidents, 20 of
them being semi tracker trailers. Several individuals are still entrapped inside
their cars while the rescue crews are working to get them out.
Deputies with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office have closed
Interstate 4 between State Road 570 and U.S. Highway 27 near Haines City.
Parts of State Road 570 also have been shut down.
The accidents are a result of smoke from yesterday’s brush
fire that started as a controlled burn. The fire burn more than 600 acres of
rural land near mile marker 55. The blaze is under control but fire officials
remain at the scene as smoke mixed with fog continues to swamp the area.
People are advised to wait patiently in their cars for both their
safety and the safety of rescue workers.
The National Weather Service in Melbourne
issued a special weather report this morning warning commuters that visibility
in the Polk County area would be down to zero
because of smoke combined with the fog. Meteorologists also said that the
visibility would improve later in the morning.
Officials suggest anyone who plan on driving on Interstate 4
in Polk County should find alternate routes. One
route would be the U.S. 27 to 17-92. People shall continue on that until it
becomes 92, which will reconnect with Interstate 4 beyond the crash.
Moreover, the Polk
County School
District said that the busses would be running,
but they would be significantly late.
