The state of Florida is making efforts to disband a community of sex offenders living under a bridge that includes a gym, kitchen, living room and two dogs.
The community was formed approximately a year ago and the men integrated in this community were forced to live under the Julia Tuttle Causeway because it is hard or nearly impossible for them – sex offenders with limited finances – to find a home here in compliance with strict local ordinances.
Several cities and states have issued a series of laws meant to keep sex offenders away from victims. The law of Miami prohibits them from living within 2,500 feet of schools, playgrounds and other places where children might gather.
"Where are we supposed to go? The way they label you, sex offender, nobody wants you around," Alejandro Ruiz, a member of the community, said.
However, leaving that aside, the state officials are now urging the members of the Julia Tuttle Causeway community to leave.
The Florida Corrections Department expressed its intention to reintegrate the sex offender living under that bridge through its spokes woman Gretl Plessinger.
The community which includes 19 men said it will fight the state, but if they will lose the dispute, a community “like no other” will be disintegrated.
The residents of the sex-offenders community have spray-painted their thoughts on the pillars of the bridge under which they live. Here are some exapmples:
"We 'R' Not Monsters."
"They Treat Animals Better!!!" "Why?"
The probation officers dealing with the case have given the men lists with possible locations where they could move. Initially, the sexual offenders were given 72 hours to find a new house, but the department spokes person said the do date was set only to motivate the men to start looking.
"We're trying to be proactive, give the offenders time to find a place," Plessinger said.
