Police put a lockdown on Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton on Wednesday after guns were shot in the campus. Exams were canceled and students were advised to remain at their dormitories.
The gun fire that caused the campus lockdown occurred at about 1:15 a.m. at a party in the University Village Apartments, according to FAU Deputy Police Chief Keith Totten. Police investigators are looking for an unidentified male suspect.
"We have been unable to locate [the suspect]," Totten said. "Due to that, we activated the emergency notification systems on campus ... and closed all the campus entries."
Photos of the "person of interest" were released by police officers. The pictures showed a man wearing a red t-shirt, dark pants and had his hair in cornrows.
"It is believed that this is an isolated incident. No one was seriously injured ... though a non student received minor injuries," said the statement released by the university officials.
The suspect fired two shots according to the statement released by FAU Police Chief Charles Lowe. A person who isn’t a student was injured, but it’s not clear yet if the person was hit by a bullet. Police said they also do not know whether the shooter was a student.
Through sirens, mass e-mails and announcements over the school's public address system, authorities alerted the students to remain at their dormitories.
The lockdown will be raised after the suspect is either caught or identified as a non-student.
The university had installed the alert system 60 days ago and this was the first time it was fully tested.
