Florida Congresswoman Doesn’t Like Talking on the Phone with Obama

A Florida congresswoman hang up the phone on the actual President-elect Barack Obama twice. She says she assumed it was a crank call. The surprising call came about 1 p.m. Obama wanted to congratulate her for her re-election and to say that he was looking forward to working with her as the ranking Republican member of the House Foreign Affairs committee. But she thought it was a Florida DJ trying to prank her, so she hung up.

Obama’s future White House chief of staff, Rahm Emmanuel, then called her to let her known she’d actually been speaking with President-elect Obama. Surprisingly, she hung up on him, too, because she was convinced the second call was another hoax.

“I thought it was one of the radio stations in South Florida playing an incredible, elaborate, terrific prank on me,” So Republican Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen told the Miami Herald.

The story has a happy end after all: the two managed to talk and Ros-Lehtinen said they had a good conversation and she congratulated him for his victory. Obama told her it was very funny that she had twice hang up on him, to which she responded that South Florida radio stations are notorious for these jokes. He didn’t blame her for being skeptical.

Ros-Lehtinen’s phone conversation with the actual Secretary of State nominee Hillary Clinton was less eventful. The two discussed issues like Cuba and Israel. Lehtienen also told Obama to consult with Senator Bob Menendez and Congressman Albio Sires on Cuba policy and to rely on Secretary of State designate Clinton on Israel.
