Flight 93's National Memorial Project Gets The Green Light

The project for the Flight 93 National Memorial appears to finally be on track, as the National Park Service, together with an organization that represents the victims’ families, managed to reach an agreement with Svonavec Inc.’s officials. This is the company that currently owns the land where the United Airlines Flight 93 crashed on September 11, 2001, after being taken over by terrorists.

The parts agreed to file in a federal court a condemnation suit, in order to determine the value of the land. As soon as the case will be filed in, the park service will take ownership of the property, which is located at about 60 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

“For us, and I believe for the president and the first lady, it is a sense of closure and a degree of healing to get this done,” explained Patrick White, a member of the Families of Flight 93 and also one of the lawyers who made everything possible.

The massive project is expected to take quite some time, but the plan for now is to focus on the initial construction, in order to have it ready by 2011, when there will be the 10 year anniversary. The estimated costs for the memorial are of $58 million and the amount it yet to be fully raised by the association involved with the project.

The plane, a Boeing 757, crashed near Shanksville after al-Qaeda hijackers took over the plane. All the 33 passengers, plus the seven crew members died in the tragic incident.
