Friday,
Flickr introduced an update for their mobile Web site that now enables
users to play Flickr videos on their phones.
The Yahoo-owned site rolled out the video capability feature
for m.flickr.com back in April, but the tool only allowed users to upload
short videos from their cell phones, without them being able to watch the clips on the
gadgets, as well.
Ever since this October, the updated mobile site has been
available in beta to select iPhone users, but beginning Friday, all
iPhone and iPod Touch users can enjoy the feature.
According to a Yahoo blog post, the company was working on
opening the video playback app to any smartphone that supported browsers such
as Webkit, Firefox Mobile and Opera Mobile.
The update to the mobile web site has also simplified access
to photo albums and currently lets users add contacts and favorite images
and change their privacy and permission settings through their phones.
For the time being, the only ones who can upload videos are professional
subscriber members, while the length of the clips is set at a maximum of 90
seconds.
Along with
the iPhone and the iPod Touch, cell phones like Nokia’s N Series, the
Samsung L870 and Android-based devices will be able to access the upgraded m.flickr.com.
Flickr has stated that in 2008, the number of people who had
surfed their mobile site had increased by 50 percent.
Flickr, an image and video hosting website, web services
suite and online community platform, announced in November this year that it
had come to host over 3 billion images.
