Even though it could be considered just another heist movie,
“Flawless” is still directed by Michael Radford, the director of “1984” and “Il
Postino.”
Compared to these Radford works, “Flawless” seems somewhat
pale, but if one puts it next to other films of its genre, the production is
special, with an interesting plot and a beautiful depiction of 1960s’ Britain.
The film tells the story of Laura Quinn, a witty and
ambitious executive at the London Diamond Corporation who is greatly frustrated
by a glass ceiling after being a loyal employee for several years and decides
to take steps in order to do something about this. Moreover, she finds out that
the company, which used many of her ideas without showing her any gratitude, is
going to dismiss her.
Quinn’s frustration and anger is noticed by Hobbs, the
nighttime janitor at London Diamond, of whose existence the executives are
virtually unaware. Having lost his wife to cancer 15 years earlier, Hobbs seems
to be the most harmless and insignificant man, who has no other interest in
life but serving the company he works for. But he decides to use the experience
he has accumulated as an employee of London Diamond to rob the company. And he
sees desperate executive Quinn as his perfect partner in crime.
Together, the two form an odd couple to plan an incredibly
ambitious heist, like no other encountered in London.
Laura Quinn is Demi Moore’s biggest role in the last years,
but her performance is definitely surpassed by that of Michael Caine, who plays
smart and experienced janitor Hobbs.
The film opens on Friday, March 28.
