A West Palm Beach police officer was left with no option but to resign from his job after a video camera on the police car’s dashboard recorded him while he was beating a handcuffed man. The recording clearly shows the police officer kicking and punching the handcuffed man in the face and body despite the fact that he was not resisting arrest.
The incident happened on May 26 when a 42-year-old man named Pablo Gilberto Valenzuela was beaten by police officers after being handcuffed. The video of the beating was released by authorities on Monday.
According to the police reports regarding the incident, Valenzuela matched the description of a man wearing a ski mask while being inside a store. Police personnel said he used pepper spray on them when they intervened and then he ran away. When the scuffle moved outside the store, Valenzuela reportedly tried to bite on of the policeman’s leg and spit at another one.
Police officers put him under arrest for battery on law enforcement officer and for resisting arrest. Valenzuela had a broken jaw, bruised eyes and other wounds.
Kurt Graham, the violent officer who beat the handcuffed man, resigned and two other police officers - Louis Schwartz and Jason Zangara - are on administrative leave.
Police Chief Delsa Bush said that the video recording clearly shows that police officers used excessive force.
"I'm not pleased with it at all," Bush said. "We are held to a much higher standard to anyone else."
Valenzuela said he doesn’t remember the confrontation, but an internal investigation is under way.
