The owner of a central Florida construction company reportedly tried to pay a hit man to eliminate an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) agent so he could avoid paying $300,000 in taxes, federal officials said.
According to the affidavit of a U.S. Treasury agent, businessman Randy Nowak, tried to reach a deal with a hit man and pay him $20,000 to kill agent Christine Brandt, who was auditing him. Of course, the company owner had no idea that the hit man was an undercover FBI agent. The affidavit also mentioned that Novak tried to hide from the government the fact that he had stashed $4 million in offshore bank accounts. He had an offshore account in Jamaica, U.S. Treasury Department Agent Robert Courtenay said in the arrest affidavit.
Amazingly, the 48-year-old businessman from Mulberry was prepared to go even further. He also discussed burning down the IRS office in Lakeland, Fla. Novak, owner of Shepherd Road construction company R.J. Nowak Enterprises Inc., actually paid the alleged hit man $10,000 as a down payment to have IRS Agent Christine Brandt eliminated.
"The FBI considers threats of violence against United States government employees due to their enforcement and/or investigative activities very serious matters," Steven Ibison, FBI special agent in charge, said according to CNN.
Novak was reportedly arrested in Polk County. He faces charges of attempting to murder a federal employee and is now in a jail in Hillsborough County. If convicted, the businessman faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.
