Five Dead in Car Bombing in Turkey’s Kurdish Region

According to Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, on Thursday a car exploded killing at least 5 people and injuring 68 others in the city of Diyarbakir, a southeastern Turkish city Kurdish-dominated.

A vehicle that was transporting troops passed a five star hotel when a car nearby exploded, Guardian Unlimited reports. The bomb was detonated by Kurdish rebels. Five people were killed, including two students who just exited the building they were taking courses.

Gov. Huseyin Avni Mutlu said: “A bomb left in a car ... was set off with a remote control. It was a very strong one. It was targeting a military service bus.”

According to him 30 soldiers were among those wounded.

In the explosion six cars were damaged and also some students were wounded.

The attack was put on the account of the Kurdish rebels and according to authorities two suspects escaped from the scene.

Diyarbakir is the city where troops who are fighting the PKK Kurdish rebels stay.

Erdogan said: "We will continue our fight against terrorism with the same determination, whether domestically or internationally," Reuters informs.

A police officer said that the blast occurred in a place full of people.

Also nearby was a hotel, a shopping center and military installations.

According to a witness, several explosions occurred one after another.

Apparently the attack may come as a response to the three air strikes carried by Turkish warplanes last month against Kurdish rebels.

The U.S. Embassy in Ankara said in a statement: “Todays bombing in Diyarbakir is a horrific example of the senseless tragedy that terrorism brings. We strongly condemn this violence and reiterate our determination to stand together with Turkey in combating terrorism in all its forms.”
