The US Consumer Product Safety Commission and EB Brands of Yonkers, N.Y. on Thursday announced the recall of about 3 million fitness balls made in China and manufactured by the company because the balls can unexpectedly burst during use if overinflated, which could cause the users to accidentally injure themselves.
The fitness balls included in the recall were made in China and sold in 55-, 65- and 75-centimeter sizes. They all were sold with a pump and inflation instructions from May 2000 to February 2009 for between $15 and $30. They are labeled with a Bally Total Fitness, Everlast or Valeo logo.
The recall comes after EB Brands has received 47 reports of balls bursting, including reports of a fracture and multiple bruises. Serious bodily injury may result if inflation and deflation instructions are not carefully followed. Exercise balls may burst from the effects of improper handling, which could cause serious injury from a fall.
Consumers were advised to contact EB Brands to receive a copy of new instructions on how to safely inflate the balls.
Anyone who has questions about the recall may contact EB Brands at 800-624-5671 between 9a.m. and 5 p.m. ET on weekdays or visit the company’s Web Site.
